By rejecting European abstract styles, American artists chose to adopt academic realismwhich depicted American urban and rural scenes. Whereas local color is often applied to a specific literary mode that flourished in the late 19th century, regionalism implies a recognition from the colonial period to the present of differences among specific areas of the country. This sense of nationalism stemmed from artists' rejection of modern art trends after World War I and the Armory Show. Regionalist-type imagery influenced many American children's book illustrators such as Holling Clancy Hollingand still shows up in advertisements, movies, and novels today.
